Creation Wheel – Genesis 1:1-2

My first week leading 3rd – 6th grade crafts at church started “In the beginning” with Genesis 1:1-2, where God created the world! I chose a Genesis Creation Wheel, with sections showing what God did each day.

Time: 15-20 minutes
Cost: $3.40 for the template + 10 cents per kid for standard art supplies
Ages: The internet says this is a good activity for 3rd-6th graders. (8-12 year olds)

Supplies:

  • Printouts of the Creation Wheel template (I chose this template from TheHarperHome on Etsy)
Note: I used cheap CardStock from WalMart
  • Scissors (for whoever will be cutting out the template)
  • Brads / Fasteners
  • Crayons or Markers for coloring
  • Something to poke a hole in the middle of the printouts
Note: Printouts do not perfectly align. Do the “tops” separate from the “bottoms”. I used a thumb tack to make a small hole and a small tipped metal embossing tool to make the hole bigger.

Preparation:

In my practice run, the Genesis Creation Wheel craft took me 25 minutes to complete. The biggest obstacles were neatly cutting out the wheels and creating a hole for the brad to go through. A friend helped me poke holes in all the cutouts, and I neatly cut several wheels before the first class.

How it went:

It was a beautiful day outside, so only one child (a third grader) chose to come in for crafts. She said that she has done something like this before, but she was content to do it again.

This type of craft seems to be a good choice for a “getting to know you” day, as it allowed for plenty of discussion while she and the other adult colored. It took every bit of our 20-minute class to finish, but there was also a lot of getting up to emphasize the things she was telling us. With the pieces pre-cut and holes pre-poked, I think this could have been a 15-minute craft.

Would I do it again?

Yes! I do think I will throw a few wheels into the rotation for future craft days.
